- Root hair length and density
- root cortical aerenchyma
- root tissue density (related to secondary wall development and tissue proportions)
- specific root length
- carboxylate exudates
- resource allocation among root classes
- phenology of root formation
- root cortical senescence
- seminal root whorls- number of seminal roots
- shoot born rooting- both mesocotyl and stem
- root gravitropic growth angles
- lateral branching
- plasticity of the above in response to nutrient and drought stress
